the tsunami again?
i don't want to sound insensitive here, but i am getting annoyed at all the tsunami relief efforts. i am grateful that people are helping other people. but what about all of the people in our own country who are homeless and have no food? we don't organize concerts for them. instead, we walk by them every day and blame them. but are they any more to blame for their plight than the victims of the tsunami? aren't they just victims of man instead of nature?

Media sensationalism... homeless folk arent sexy but three story high waves and islands wiped bare of vegetation are. America can't take care of its own yet we attempt to mother the world. I'm not anti-america mind you, but I am starting to flip to the camp of we have no freakin business playing the worlds police, saving folks who wont save thier own damned selves.
Okay, yeah, but come on. The tsunami is devastation on a monumental scale, and the hundreds of thousands dead, not to mention all of those left in a state that was worse than before (a kind of impoverishment even the US doesn't know) would dictate that some help be given. Yeah, we haven't helped those who are homeless here, but there are shelters and charities doing what they can and it's not fair to diminish the value of their work by pointing out that the problem hasn't been solved. Not everyone will be helped, that's just the nature of the beast. We won't help all the tsunami victims either, but it's right to try. And it's not like other countries don't have homeless people...should they also forgo tsunami aid to help out their own? Also...I don't think it's right to characterize the matter as media sensationalism. The tsunami was not sexy, by any means of the word, and it was one of the biggest disastors in history. Seems appropriate to give it some large amount of coverage, don't you think? Or would it be better for all of us to focus on Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston?
